Did you know…
There is something called a Black-Dog Bias?
is a veterinarian and animal shelter phenomenon in which black dogs are passed over for adoption in favor of lighter-colored animals. Black dog bias is also known as “big black dog syndrome.” Shelters often use the term BBD, or big black dog, to describe the type of larger dark-colored mixed-breed typically passed over by adopters.
According to what I have found, the Black-Dog bias has been theorized to be a result of a few factors. Theories have revolved around:
- the media’s portrayal of black animals as being associated with evil and misfortune
- black animals are harder to photograph because of their darker coat, this is evident especially in newspapers that print only black and white photographs.
- another theory states that black animals do in fact get adopted however, they take longer to be adopted as opposed to their lighter counterparts.
Very interesting…
